Controls Engineer - San Diego, CA

Our San Diego office has immediate needs for Technical Lead Engineers who are experienced in aspects of water & wastewater, oil & gas pipeline controls and/or SCADA systems. The Technical Lead (TL) is expected to lead a technical project execution team, both leading the design and participating in the system configuration and testing process.

This Rutter Hinz office is the newest office (6 years) in our 35 year old company. During this time the San Diego office has already established itself in a number of markets, including water & wastewater, oil & gas transportation, power generation, manufacturing, and others.

We are located in a new building in Carlsbad (North San Diego County), in a modern office campus, with views of the Pacific Ocean from our office windows. The office is quickly accessible to major freeways and transportation arteries. Carlsbad blends an historic beach town (with all the associated quaint shops and restaurants) with a vibrant business community. Candidates will be expected to handle a wide range of project responsibilities, including many (but not necessarily all) of the following:

  • Ability to specify PLC and DCS architecture and control system instruments
  • Preparation of device and I/O lists, loop diagrams and wiring/connection diagrams
  • Structured software design of PLC's, HMI's, RTU's and other SCADA devices
  • HMI development experience in Wonderware and RSView would be preferred
  • Ability to design installations including motor controls and drives, control room layouts, I/O marshalling and controls enclosures, etc.
  • Design of industrial communication networks such as Ethernet, ControlNet, etc.
  • Develop construction scope for client specifications
  • Working knowledge of Visual Basic, C++, Access and SQL Server
  • Provide on-site commissioning, configuration and startup support
  • Provide formal and informal training on configuration, maintenance and operations for automation systems
  • Generation of project and proposal documentation
  • Other aspects of electrical/controls projects as necessary

Successful Rutter Hinz technical personnel possess a wide range of the following capabilities:

  • Ability to lead, motivate, and work within a technical team environment
  • Familiarity with a wide range of aspects of systems integration (including PLC, HMI, instrumentation, networking, communication, power distribution, mechanical interfaces)
  • Ability to apply the latest technologies and methodologies to the design stages at the onset of the project, by applying independent thinking and visionary design
  • Ability and willingness to execute projects according to a Rutter Hinz defined Project Execution Methodology
  • Proficiency with customer interface, fiscal responsibility, and adherence to project schedule, budget and manpower planning
  • Structured control system design experience, with a structured approach to problem solving and project execution
  • Organizational and time management skills
  • Proficiency in both written and oral communication
  • Proficiency with computer operating systems, networks and electronic information handling
  • Proficiency with a variety of Microsoft applications including Outlook, Excel, Access, Word, Visio, Project, and PowerPoint
  • An organized approach to problem solving, an attention to detail, a healthy work ethic, and the ambition to grow within our company.

Five or more years of related experience are required. An engineering degree would be a benefit, but not a requirement. Applicants must have superior oral and written communications skills in English.
